What is a Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival? It is a celebration of the livestock, agriculture, and forestry in historic Surry County, Virginia which has gone “hog wild.” Chippokes Plantation State Park will host the 33rd annual Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival on July 19 and 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Live music on stage, over 200 artisans and crafters under the shade of blooming crepe myrtle trees, children’s activities, plenty of cooling refreshments and colloquial foods, animals, hayrides, demonstrations and even plenty of shade are waiting on the banks of the James River. It is a great day out in the country for folks of all ages – a great time for families.

Since the 1600s, Surry's economy has been largely based on the "other white meat," Pork. The first hog farm in America began in Surry County between 1607 and 1608, located directly across the river from Jamestown, where colonists kept their hogs.

Pork, peanut and pine have been Surry County's cash crops for nearly 400 years. The festival celebrates these cash crops with one of the largest arts and crafts festivals along the east coast. This tremendous event is primarily coordinated and staffed with local volunteers. Food booths are hosted by local non-profit organizations serving char-grilled pork chops, ham sandwiches, sausage, barbeque, pork rinds, cracklings, chitterlings, salted peanuts, peanut candy, peanut pie, applejacks, lemonade, iced tea, and more.

Live music on stage from 10am – 5pm on both Saturday and Sunday. The annual performers will be back with their traditional gospel, country, and bluegrass specials.
The special band this year is David Lee Murphy, playing on Saturday at 3:00pm.

"Take A Walk Through Surry" and back into time with Surry's free barn display featuring county historical society information. If you didn’t get your commemorative “PPP Festival” lapel/cap pin last year, they are available again this year. The annual parade features antique equipment, automobiles, tractors, and Little Mister and Miss Peanut. Take in the gas and steam engine operation of an antique sawmill in full operation over at the Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum.

The Pork, Peanut and Pine Festival Committee is a non-profit organization consisting of 21 dedicated volunteers throughout the county; four members have served on the committee since its inception in 1975.

The event, exhibits, tours, and tram rides are included in the admission price of $5:00 per person. Youths 10 years and under are admitted free. For information, call (757) 294-3625.
